Works well. No issues.I installed this myself over this past winter and had no issues. My Ecobee thermostat has built-in humidifier support so I hooked that up instead of using the included manual control. Also based upon the other reviews, I chose not to use the included saddle valve and instead soldered a tee onto the hot water line. One thing that I do want to point out that wasn't immediately clear to me before buying is that if you need to install the unit with the pipe existing out the right side instead of the left side as is shown in the picture, the whole unit is fully reversible and even the Aprilaire logo can be flipped around so that it is right-side-up. 5David wrote a nice installation review and I agree that the 700M connected ...David wrote a nice installation review and I agree that the 700M connected to the Nest works perfectly for controlling a humidifier(Aprillaire 700M). I have a 3rd generation Nest and installation is the same as 2nd generation. Setting up the Nest for humidifier operation is well documented and will require Pro setup changes to the equipment settings.I made some changes to David's wiring diagram to reflect my connections which isolates the Humidifier control wires from the Nest relay. My concern with not isolating power through the added relay (as in David's circuit diagram) is that the internal Nest relay will be exposed to higher switching current diminishing the life of the Nest's internal relay. Also David's circuit is not clear as to the specific connections or provides a control operational description.The control wires on the 700M I suspect operate an internal 24VAC relay (internal to the 700M) that controls the fan motor and water valve solenoid which are powered by the 120VAC. There is no circuit information that came with the 700M or at the Aprilaire website to confirm the internal 700M circuit. Functionally when 24VAC power is supplied to the 700M brown control wires, the fan and solenoid are powered on. The addition of a 24VAC relay (as documented in the attached circuit diagram) eliminates the need to know what's going on internally in the 700M. The 700M product specs state that the Aprilaire draws 0.3 amps but is not specific at the control wires or complete, the added relay draws 0.1amp so the Nest asterisk relay contact is exposed to a known 0.1 amp. 5Get the digital version!This review is specifically for the 700M model. Do not buy the manual control! The digital 700 is outstanding and would be 4 stars only for the lack of warranty, otherwise a perfect 5.I got this unit but after it arrived and I started reading the installation info I exchanged it for the digital control version.The humidifier itself is the same in both versions, however the digital control is WAY more capable. Based on the description I thought the only difference was the fancy lcd screen which I didn't care about.Among other things, the digital version can operate the furnace fan as needed to control humidity independent of whether heat is called. I can't think of a situation where someone wouldn't need this feature. You might get away without it on a heat pump where the fan is running more often than not. But on a gas furnace where you have bursts of intense heat with a short fan cycle, it would be hard to get enough humidity in short period.You can get a separate part to enable this feature on the manual control, but by the time you buy that you've more than made up for the small price difference to get the digital version with it already built in.Furthermore, the digital control will adjust humidity based on outside temperature in coordination with your chosen humidity level. That way you don't have to constantly adjust the knob to avoid condensation issues. Just set it and forget it.If you do decide manual control is what you need on occasion, the digital version also has a switch to make it purely manual like the manual version.Lastly, the digital version tells you at a glance what the actual humidity percentage is at any given time, so no guess work.Hands down without question the digital version is worth the small extra price.The digital model has been installed for a few weeks now and it is wonderful. My only complaint is the stupid "no warranty unless installed by licensed hvac tech" gimmick. There is no reason for this other than to pat their business dealers on the back while still selling to consumers directly. Any remotely handy person who can read a wiring diagram can install this successfully. 2Nest 3rd gen + 600M = Automated goodnessThis is an awesome humidifier. We have a 2400 sq ft house and it does a good job eliminating the issues we had this winter of shocks and itchiness. There are plenty of reviews here that say how good it is, but I wanted to get into a little detail about the wiring, because there are so many diagrams out there about how to hook this up to a Nest, and none of them fit our needs. I want to provide some insight to people who may want the same thing, which is a humidifier completely controlled automatically by a (3rd gen) Nest, and for it to run regardless of the heat being on or not. Our house is only a couple years old, and the furnace is fairly efficient, so it doesn't cycle heat long enough for the humidifier to get the RH level in our home to the desired levels.I ended up purchasing the relay that many of these diagrams have, and I didn't even need it. I'm not sure what the purpose of the relay is, but as you can see in the attached picture, all the wiring in our system was done on the 24VAC terminals. This eliminates the need for the transformer, the relay, and the humidistat. Wiring this way allows the Nest to completely control the humidifier. When the Nest calls for humidity, it sends 24VAC on the * wire, so hooking that up to the humidifier solenoid, and supplying the common wire to the other completes the circuit when called. Wiring this way also requires 6 wires to the Nest, so I ran 18/7 wire by taping it to the existing 18/5 wire and pulling it through the wall to the basement.The next step depends on your needs. If (and only if) you have hot water running to the humidifier, and the water heater is close to the furnace, you can set the "Pro" settings on the thermostat to be "Hum. Only", and set the fan to Activate. Otherwise, you'll have to do "Hum + Heat". Without hot water, you'll just be wasting a bunch of cold water. 5Eureka!! Wiring setup with Ecobee4 -- Works Perfectly!I got the Aprilaire 700M (manual) version because with a smart thermostat, you don't need an outdoor sensor to tell the temperature. The idea is that the relative humidity (RH) inside your house should decrease as the outside temperature also decreases. Otherwise you'll get condensation on the windows and other parts of your home, leading to frost, freezing, dry-rot in your attic or window sills, etc. The Ecobee4 knows the temperature at your location (via Wi-Fi connection) and has a "Frost Control" setting that will automatically adjust the home's humidity level accordingly; no need to use the manual humidistat and constantly change the humidity setting as temperatures change.I've attached a diagram of the exact wiring I used -- even the colors are the same. It took combining about 4 different diagrams that only told part of the story, a call to customer service, an email to an HVAC guy, and bit of trial and error (e.g. I had to learn not to use the HUM connection on my furnace because it's only charged when blowing heat) but my Aprilaire 700M and Ecobee4 now work PERFECTLY together! When I need humidity in my house, my thermostat will turn on the furnace fan and the humidifier to add humidity without heat... as well as with heat, if needed.IMPORTANT Instructions:1) You DO NOT need to use/wire the humidistat control (dial-a-humidity level) because the Ecobee4 perfectly takes it's place (actually, it does a much better job).2) You have to know that when you set up your humidifier with Ecobee, you have to tell it that it's a "steam" humidifier, NOT an evaporative one. This is not true, but it will allow the Ecobee to call for humidity even without heat blowing.3) You need to purchase an extra relay to make the call for humidity without heat to work. Aprilaire recommends the Aprilaire 4851 relay. I'm not convinced there isn't a less expensive relay that will make this work, but I know the 4851 will work.4) Take note that the G (green) wire needs to be disconnected from your furnace control board. This is according to the 4851 relay instructions. There are a few other oddities with the wiring too, so pay close attention.5) Be sure to use 18-guage wire for 24 volt purposes (which is all this diagram shows)6) I used the 2-wire setup for my Ecobee; there is a 1-wire installation, but I couldn't get it to work.7) I did not need to use the transformer the Aprilaire 700M came with (because I didn't need extra 24v power).8) When using no-heat with your humidifier, please note that Aprilaire recommends installing the humidifier on the hot-air service side of your furnace plenum, and to use hot water to flow into your 700M. This will allow the water to evaporate better. I'm going to add insulation around my 1/4" OD (outside-diameter) copper tubing (sold seperately needed for installation, with compression fasteners) to keep the water a little hotter. I used a SharkBite valve (Model # 24983A; 1/2" push-to-connect, 1/2" push-to-connect, and 1/4" compression fitting) to tap into my hot water line. The SharkBite fittings made it super easy to install onto my PEX hot water pipe. You may want to use something similar if you don't want to use the saddle valve the 700M came with (which I couldn't, nor did I want to run the risk).I had virtually no plumbing or electrical experience before doing this install, so you can do it too!I've attached a few other photos and the diagram that came with the 4851 relay, and the Ecobee4.I hope this helps! Free money. 5Works greatI spent a lot of time deciding on a humidifier. I checked humidity levels all over the house and they were pretty consistent at 23-25% at 25-30 degrees outside. My home is 3000 sf and the specs for this model put that size at its limit. I was debating between the 600 and this model, the 400. Ultimately, I picked this model for its efficient water usage and after a lot of use I am positive I made the right choice. Unlike other humidifiers this one does not drain water unless there is a problem. Water still comes in from the top and flows over the water panel but water flow stops when a holding cup gets filled on the bottom. Other models just keep running water until there is no longer a call for humidity by the humidistat. The water in the cup is then wicked up and then water flow turns on again, This happens over and over as needed.Installation was pretty straight forward. It took $36 worth of parts at the hardware store and about 3 hours to get it installed. Tape the supplied outline on either the supply (make sure it's above the AC Coil) or the return duct and cut a hole. Find a spot for the bypass (a 6" round duct) on the other duct and make a hole there. The unit mounts the the duct with several screws (self taping sheet metal screws make fast work) and two screws for the 6" duct coming off of it. Just a tip - if the unit can be mounted with the first section of duct attached then screw it on before mounting it. I had a little trouble getting a drill in there once it was mounted to the furnace. I used metal tape on the edges of the unit itself and all the duct joints. I used two adjustable elbows and a short section of flex duct to make the connection between the unit and the bypass.Now for the water. I did more research on this than I care to admit. Here's what I kept reading, if the furnace does not have long run cycles then run hot water to the humidifier. They explained it that if the furnace doesn't get hot for a long time then the humidifier will not work as efficient. So, with that logic I ran hot water to it. The kit includes a saddle valve which makes for an easy install. Unfortunately these aren't the greatest so I put in a different valve. This took more time than anything else. Once the valve was in, I ran the shortest possible length of tubing to the humidifier in an attempt to keep the incoming hot water as hot as possible. After running the humidifier for some time now, my opinion is the hot water makes no difference. The water flow doesn't run enough to keep it hot for very long. I found that water will run for maybe 1 minute max before the fill cup fills and shuts off the water. After a couple minutes the cup will empty and water will run again, but this time for even less time because the water panel is already wet. The heat from the furnace, even on a short run time, seems to do just fine.Next was the wiring. Turn off power to the furnace to avoid frying the board. I tapped into an existing 24VAC line for the power, connected the C (common) and H (humidifier) from the furnace board, the white and yellow from the humidifier and the outside temp sensor wires to the humidistat. I mounted the humidistat before the humidifier on the cold air return.The humidistat will work in automatic mode based on outside temperature. I found this a little conservative for my home. When in manual mode I can maintain over 40% humidity without a problem. I usually don't keep it this high but wanted to see if it could do it. I took the same humidity readings as prior and have a reading within 3% throughout the house. 5Aprilaire 600M Humidifier and 3rd gen Nest Thermostat InstallAprilaire 600M Humidifier and 3rd gen Nest Thermostat InstallThis is a fairly easy project, but there are many steps involved, and a lot of info to gather. I am writing this so you should have everything you need in this review to do the project. There are many wiring diagrams you may stumble upon. I have included the 2 best ones I have found. I only had 4 wires in the bundle run to my thermostat. I had AC, heat, and fan. I ran 18/8 wire so I would have 8 wires total. Then I could have 1 for common so that the nest would always be powered, and * for the humidifier, 2 more than my original 4 bringing the total to 6 wires, leaving 2 extra to futureproof. The 18/8 wire is more expensive per foot, but I only needed 30 (bought locally). 18/7 comes in a 50 roll, so the price was the same. Just measure how much you need, then add about 5-10 to be safe. Some systems have dual fan speeds and such, which are many times not used, but the nest may be able to use them. Find your furnace manual online or look at the wiring diagram(s) inside the furnace access covers if there are any. If you have to run more wire, plug the wires in to the nest setup website, so you can use the same colored wires they did to minimize confusion. If you have extra unused wires, put both ends in a wire nut to be safe. I first wired everything without the included transformer and was using the furnace s built in transformer, see attached wiring diagram. When I first turned everything on, it all seemed to work fine for about 5 seconds, then smoke blew out the side of the solenoid valve! I turned the heat way down and let the furnace finish its cycle and the solenoid valve got pretty hot so there was definitely a short. Amazon sent me a new solenoid valve so no big deal there. The reason for using the included transformer with the relay is to isolate the humidifier solenoid from the furnace and Nest, and this experience proved to me why that would be important! The downside to having a dedicated transformer to the humidifier is that it is always on, and drawing extremely minimal power, but its still power. You may be able to wire the 110V side of the transformer to the extra contacts on a 6AZU3 relay so that there is no such loss, or maybe the relay can control the 110V side and then 24V side always stays connected using the 6AZU2 relay, do some research and try it!I mounted the relay and extra transformer inside the furnace next to the control board.I took the solenoid apart, and it looks like the windings shorted out to the outside case. I m not sure if it would cause more harm than good, but you could take apart the solenoid before powering it up to check that nothing is shorting with the outer casing, maybe add some electrical tape around the windings, but you risk damaging the wires that power the solenoid. If you need/want to take it apart, take off the nut on the end, then the small rubber grommet. Now the electrical part of this should slide off the shaft. The slotted part (for a flathead screwdriver) does not need to be taken off, that just holds the water valve in. Then push the yellow wires in to the housing while carefully working the windings out of the housing.Keep in mind that the Nest does not have a built in table to decide what humidity you need for a given outside temperature, as described in the Aprilaire operating manual. I have read that the Ecobee thermostats have this kind of table built in. There is a website mynestreports that has some custom settings you can use, including this very table, for the Nest. His values are exactly what is in the Aprilaire owners manual for the M versions. You just log in with your Nest login, and check the boxes and it works. Many complain about this, so I wish Nest would add this feature to the software! Also, the Nest and the app, configured in Hum. will allow you to adjust the Rh more precisely while the Hum. + heat option shows you rain drops on a slider scale. The rain drops do correspond to a 5% increment, as verified on mynestreports.com. So if you set the Aprilaire up using hot water, everything else the same, and you could control the fan, you could use the Hum. setting and see the Rh. Minor point.I ve run the humidifier now for about a month, and after the house absorbed the moisture, the setup holds my set humidity well. I added 5% to the humidity numbers in mynestreports for everything below 40%, so 40 % is repeated. This is because my heater runs a long time in the morning to warm the house back up from being turned down at night. The day temps are higher, so I wouldn t get as much humidity as I could because the morning heat run would cut the humidifier early for the current morning temp. Basically, on mynestreports you can see how long the heater has been on, and how long the humidifier has been on. If the times are the same the humidifier is on whenever you are heating and you are getting as much humidity as you can using cold water. Just keep an eye on the windows for any condensation.Keep in mind that the advertised size of house that the Aprilaire 500 and 600 s can humidify is probably based on using hot water to evaporate more water. I have an on demand heater, so I did not want to run the water heater all the time. I therefore bought the 600M so that cold water would work better. It seems overkill, but the prices are very comparable especially through Amazon Warehouse. Also, the yellow plastic orifice in the discharge tube is the same for the 500 and 600, so you are using the same amount of water either way, and electrically they are identical.Also, the 400 requires you to change filters twice per season, but it is more efficient with the water. You will need a drain of some kind for the 500 and 600. My furnace had a small pump on the side to catch water from the furnace and AC, so I just put the drain in the 3rd hole, works fine.I used a duct for a rectangular register, and cut it and bent it with some snips and sheet metal pliers, then sealed the edges with foil tape. If you look closely at one of the pictures, you can see that I left the corner of the duct intact, and its more of a vane now. I just used some pliers and sheet metal pliers to bend the corner into a flat plate, this keeps the duct more rigid. Your installation may be different, but try to minimize how long of ducting you need and turns.I almost had to move/modify my furnace vents, but there was enough clearance, keep this in mind for your installation.Also, consider using a level when cutting your opening and installing the unit, the water distributes in a tray on top, and you want it distributing evenly.There is a Nest Pro Installation Guide available. There are some wiring diagrams in there, which can be useful, but not complete or straightforward. The diagrams I have included should work for the nest. They recommend a different relay, but they do the same thing.You will need to go into the pro settings, just hit continue and ok etc. Use the dial to move down to the *. Select it, and set it up for being a humidifier. In the pro install guide, it says Pro Setup will show an Activate setting to specify whether heat needs to be activated for humidification to turn on. Bypass humidifiers should use the Hum. + heat option while steam, independent, or on-demand humidifiers should use the Hum. only option. So in this case that means the humidifier will only turn on when the heat and fan is on. You can set this up to run the humidifier with the fan, and no heat, but you will need to plump the humidifier to hot water then, see the Aprilaire manual on their website.The 600M came with a saddle valve (I have read these are not the best), the manual humidistat, evaporation panel and all internals, but no wiring, ducting, or plumbing. Keep in mind the warranty is voided if you install it and are not a professional. The only part I could see breaking is the solenoid valve, and those are ~$30.Here are some links to useful tools you may not have. The non-contact voltage tester is pretty useful with the built in flashlight. The tin snips are hardened so they should last a long time. The pex tool was the cheapest I found, the smallest, which could come in handy in tight places and for storing it, and it comes with a tubing cutter and test gauge. No need for the digital automatic version, and no need to use the controller that comes with this one either- Nest handles it all for you.There are a few reviewers on here that have written up nice reviews with wiring diagrams that include the use of a third party relay... THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY with a Nest thermostat. I have my humidification system running perfectly using the 'Stand alone humidifier, 1 wire' schematic from the nest pro install manual. Look at page 15 and that's where you will find these diagrams. The Nest '*' terminal, to which you connect one of the brown wires from the humidifier, is powered by 24v and therefore is capable of triggering the humidifier on it's own - no need for a relay! So the wiring is simple: one brown wire from humidifier(doesn't matter which one) goes to nest * terminal, the other brown wire goes to the 'C' common ground terminal on your furnace control board.... That's literally it, aside from plugging the unit into an outlet. The only extra step you need to take from here is getting into the Nest pro-setup so that you can 1: identify/confirm the humidifier is being used on the * terminal, and 2: to configure the humidifier to either turn on with heat from furnace (cold/hot water hook up), or turn on separately with just furnace fan (hot water hook up only). I chose to hook my 700m up to hot water because I live in Colorado and water is expensive and the heated water aids in evaporation and overall efficiency of the humidifier. I'm very glad that I did too because there is a healthy stream of water running into the drain while it's in operation. I also recommend the hot water hook up so that you have the flexibility of choosing to run the humidifier separate from your heat by just using your furnace fan. This takes a few tweaks in the nest pro menu to switch to this configuration but it's worth it. I haven't had much time to evaluate how the unit actually raises humidity but I did run it on just the fan from furnace (no heat) and was able to raise humidity in house from 31% to 33% in about 20 mins. I have a good sized first floor, 3200sqft house all together however the humidifier is only operating on the first floor furnace, second floor has separate HVAC.One additional comment on design- I wish that Aprilaire would come up with a simple water reclamation catch system to gather the water that isn't evaporated on the first pass over the filter and recycle it over again so that we aren't dumping this much water down the drain. This seems like a very simple design element and well worth the decreased expense off operation for those of us in localities that pay top dollar for water. 5Great ProductJust wanted to share my review of this product after the install.INSTALL Like others have stated this is a fairly difficult install for your everyday DIYer. I my my self did not have any problems and it took me about 4-5 hours I would guess. I am not an HVAC professional, however I am an Industrial electromechanical technician, so I do similar work for a living The install of the unit itself is pretty straight forward, the instructions are pretty decent for mounting and running the bypass duct work, I think most DIYers could figure this out. The trickier part is the wiring. If you are NOT familiar with reading a wiring and have a basic understanding of electric wiring principals I DO NOT recommend installing this yourself.There are no instructions or explanations on how to wire the unit, only the simple wiring diagram. When I get some time I plan to make a YouTube video tutorial on how to complete the wiring. Side note: I wired mine for Automatic Mode with blower activation.OPERATION I have had the unit installed for about a week now and I love it. When I fired it up for the first time, I was a little nervous the first few hours. It ran pretty much non-stop. It did add about 12-15 %RH in the first hour or so but it would drop just as fast. What I didn't realize is that everything in the home is very dry and it takes quite awhile to absorb that moisture into the woodwork, furniture, carpet, etc. So as a forewarning it could take up to a week for the unit to settle down and run normally. Currently in Iowa it is about 25 degrees and I would say the unit only runs a couple times a day to keep a RH of about 42-45%.I have verified with another RH sensor that the controller is withing 1-3% RH, which I think is acceptable. Keep in mind that if you are running in automatic mode with the outdoor temp sensor the colder the outside temps the lower the indoor RH will be. This is explained in detail in the manual.OVERALL Overall I would absolutely recommend this product. The install is fairly simple and the price is right. I purchased this on amazon for $140 and spent just under $100 in extra materials to complete. (there is an install kit sold on amazon for $90) The unit seems to run efficiently and keeps the house comfortable. Aprilaire is much more complex than their Honeywell competitor, but for less upfront money and a more efficient operation, with much more constant control, this product wins. My only complaint is the warranty for the DIYer. There is none. Which i can understand based on some the hack job instructional YouTube videos I have seen. However, feel I did a cleaner, more quality job myself than I could have hired out for a few hundred bucks. Just a tip though for the person who is a little scared of installing this yourself, I have seen some ads in the back of the newspaper for HVAC company's that are Aprilaire dealers that sometimes run sales. You might be able to get a good deal and have a similar product installed for cheap and get the 5 year warranty.Hope this helps someone out, and keep an eye out for my tutorial on the wiring side! 4Works great with my Nest! Keeps my humidity where I want it!This unit works PERFECTLY with my Nest thermostat. It took some digging and a few different wiring combinations but I am here to help the rest! My house is a 2600 sq ft colonial. This unit has helped my humidity levels tremendously.I read a lot of conflicted opinions on which side of the furnace to install this thing. I had 2 choices, cold air return side with hot water or furnace side plenum with cold water. I don't believe having all the moisture go in and through the workings of your furnace is a good idea. THAT'S MY OPINION. Unless something goes SERIOUSLY wrong, this thing is not going to leak into my plenum. The way it is designed would be to leak on the OUTSIDE of the plenum and thus making the water run down the side of my furnace on the OUTSIDE of the metal cabinet it's built into. I don't see how that would cause any issues at all.So, onto the wiring. I had installed my Nest about 3 days prior to getting the 700m in the mail. I ran fresh 18/7 wiring from my furnace to my Nest. I'm currently using 6 of them. Before I only have a 4 wire setup. This gives me options at least.At the humidifier I have 2 brown wires coming out of the water solenoid. I purchased the 6AZF2 relay (it IS necessary with a Nest in order for it to control the HUM) and it needs 2 connections from your C wire coming from the furnace board. This essentially completes the circuit. The attached photo is exactly how I have mine wired and is the ONLY way I could get any part of the unit to power on. I do not use the manual humidistat as my Nest shows me the humidity in my home (or at least what it is on the first floor)This unit can certainly be installed by anyone who's even a little bit handy. Be careful when you're cutting the sheet metal, it doesn't care if your fingers get in the way. Also, make sure you follow the template VERY precisely. The amount of metal left for you to put screws into gets very thin if you don't stay inside the lines.Overall a great unit and working well with my Nest once I figured out the wiring. You will still have to adjust the humidity level manually inside your Nest menus but I have a feeling an update will have an automatic setting based on the local outside temps. Only time will tell!Just for the record, my furnace is a Carrier Comfort 95 - model 59SC5, my Nest is a 2.0 version running 4.3 software.PS: Save the money if you're hooking this up to a Nest and buy the Manual version. It was a $40 difference when I bought mine between the auto and the manual version. Seems worth it to me since you can't use both to control it, at least I've not seen a way to do that... 5
