Works great, will last longer if you take a couple of minutes to waterproof it
Does just what it is supposed to do.The only minor drawback is that it is just simple turned wood without any sort of finish. Not unexpected, for four bucks, and that hwon't effect how it works, but will effect the longevity if it's used and washed frequently (it's the washing, not the tart tamping that will be rough on it)Simple solution is to treat with a little food safe oil. I gave it a good coat of the Boos Mystery Oil that I use for my cutting board, just took a couple of minutes, problem solved.
4Doesn't work very well for me
This seems like it would be a good concept and I was eager to try it, because my neighbor was so happy with a similar one she had. Unfortunately, the dough sticks to this item, so it is basically not usable for me at this time. I'm going to oil it and see if that makes it nonstick. If that works I will revise my review.
2Great for pressing herbal infusions when waterproofed first
As noted elsewhere, this is a $4 item... I bought it to press herbal infusions and noticed what someone else mentioned that after the 1st use/wash, it got a little "raggy." I was able to sand it back into shape in less than 30 seconds. Then applied olive oil to seal/waterproof, and it's perfect. I've heard mineral oil is better (no rancidity factor) but I am lazy and cheap (don't have mineral oil on hand) and it was only $4.
5Poor quality
I don't like this item because there is no finish on it. It feels like you could get splinters, its rough. I would not recommend it to anyone.
2Good tool for making foods in mini muffin trays
I bought this to try to make sausage cups in my mini muffin tray.It says it is for pastry, but I figured it would work fine for my low carb sausage and egg muffins.I was pushing the sausage down in with my fingers, but thought this would work better.Well, yes and no!It works great to spread out the sausage into a cup shape in the tins.BUT - meat sticks to the wood. Not sure if it sticks to pastry or not.I tried greasing it, tried spraying it with pam, but it still stuck to the meat.It still cut my time in making them in half, so all in all, I am glad I bought it.
5Don't bother, not even at this price.
This one's not bad for the money, but now that I've used it a few times be advised it's subject to tiny splinters. The surface just wasn't sanded and finished smoothly enough. Not a huge loss since it was pretty cheap, however I wouldn't buy again and have discontinued using mine due to the risk of leaving bits in the food, no matter how tiny.
2Buy this if you want wood splinters in your tarts!
I expected a dough tamper to have smooth ends however the one I received has rough ends that splinters when touching it. This can't be used on food.
1Lower quality wood and finishing.
The size is nice, but the quality of wood and finishing is poor. The larger end of my tamper was not smooth and even, but a rough across-the-grain cut that has not been polished well. The rough pits like to grab into the tart dough. This makes it work less well for tamping and also necessitates washing with water. Ideally wood tools like this shouldn't be washed much, especially when they're not using a good cooking implement wood like olive wood or rubberwood.
2Poor quality control, mine is going in trash.
If you get lucky and get a perfect piece of wood, this might be OK. Mine has some defects where it counts most (one the base), and appears to have been patched up with wood filler after it came of the lathe. Since this touches food it is going in the trash; I am sure wood filler is not food grade. Not to mention it is not smooth and could harbor bacteria. You get what you pay for.
1No coating, raw wood
This tart tamper is great because it has the different sized ends. With that said, it is unfinished so I gave it a 4. Sorry but I'll just end up throwing it away after a few uses. Hard to sanitize because it soaks up whatever you clean it with. If anyone out there has any suggestions on how to clean and sanitize it without causing splinters, please let me know. I applied olive oil to it before using it the first time. It works just fine as far as pushing the dough down in the cups. But keep flour on it or it'll get sticky and rip up your dough. I use the large end for mincing dried herbs works great.
