Customer Reviews

The best rotary grater ever made. I had one for years and eventually broke the coarse grater part. First I went cheap and bought a similar style (Westmark?) here on Amazon. I quickly realized that was a mistake so I came back and bought the real deal. Now I keep the fine grater in the old one, and the coarse grater in the new one.The grating tub on the ikea is a bit bigger than the others, but the real difference is the sturdiness of the Ikea. The handle doesn't flop around or feel like it's ready to break and the graters are held on with a screw on the Ikea. With the others they snap in with a piece of plastic that will eventually wear out. 5No more grated knuckles YES! this gadget is awesome. It grates cheese with ease, cleaning is a breeze. (Sorry, had to go with the rhyme) It really is easy to take apart and clean or replace insert. Grate the cheese right into your bowl, it doesn't go all over the place like old graters. Left hand/right hand is a plus, my lefty son doesn't have to adjust. (did I just rhyme again?) It did not work for fresh ginger, and wasn't suitable for almonds or onions. Oh well, I tried. Never mind, I love it. 5NOT for "Lefties"! Had I been rating it only for a "right-handed" person like myself, I probably would have given it five stars even though I have a bit of an issue because of a lack of sufficient leverage over the last model that I owned. It's well constructed and has tripped through the dishwasher without any issues. However, since it is described as being for right or left-handed people, you are going to be upset if you are the latter. The handled cone containing the grating rasps can indeed be shifted from the right to the left. But if you shift it to the left to turn with your left hand, the rasps are then facing the wrong way and to operate it you have to turn the handle counter-clockwise (towards you instead of the natural away from you) and this is extremely awkward--I tried it. 4Easy on hands with arthritis Or at least 'easier' on hands with arthritis. This is the best rotary grater I have tried and I have tried plenty in all my years. It is easier to hold than the large one I had and the shape is more comfortable than others. It's also easy to unscrew the end and slide the grater part out for cleaning. And it leaves a tiny piece of ungrated cheese in there as my prize. I don't see that as a bad thing. After all, what's the good of grating cheese it you don't take a bite. Plus it comes with a smaller grater which I love for grating cheese for pimento cheese. I hate chopping eggs and this is also excellent for boiled eggs. When this one goes to kitchen gadget heaven I will most certainly buy another just like it. 5Flimsy and doesn't last Pretty flimsy build quality. The handle that you hold to turn the rotary mechanism slips off easily This isn't too bad because you can just slip it back on, but it is annoying. The real problem is with another part of the rotary mechanism. The way the metal blade attaches to the plastic is not built to last. First pieces of the plastic started to break off (yes, into the grated food), then, finally, the metal blade detached completely from the handle and it is now unusable and in the trash. 2THIS IS DEFINITELY THE ONE TO BUY! I bought two previous rotary graters and was terribly disappointed. I returned one but got so aggravated that I threw that all metal thing in the trash. This one, however, is awesome, and I absolutely love it. The handle turns smoothly. The cheese grates with little resistance, and then you just throw it in the dishwasher for the quickest clean-up ever. Seriously, it cannot get any easier than that, and I would recommend to everyone that this is definitely the cheese grater to buy! 5Excellent cheese grater After a long search involving several unhappy purchases, we have finally found a replacement for our no longer manufactured cheese grater. This grater is easy to turn; can be used left or right-handed; seems sturdy even on an aged parm; and washes beautifully in the dishwasher. I would highly recommend this product. 5Not a disinteGRATER I've tried quite a few rotary graters and for the most part they've been disappointments. Some have been pricier and bore "elite" brand names. I had one like this one that I've been using for a couple of years. It was one of the best I've found. It can go to it on hard cheeses without going to pieces.I didn't know the brand of my old one for sure, but the "Ikea Stralande Rotary Cheese and Food Grater" is identical to the unit I've had good experience with, so I ordered a couple more (we love our cheeses and keep the grater right in the zip lock bag with each type of cheese).I consider my quest for the best rotary grater to be well satisfied. I recommend the "Ikea Stralande Rotary Cheese and Food Grater" for a combination of economy and quality. 5Surprised!...at first I just tossed my second broken Pampered Chef (PC) cheese grater in the trash and was so bummed I would never find another grater that would work as well as that one did. Both of the PC graters broke in exactly the same spot so I finally decided it was time to try something different. I was a little apprehensive to try this one when I read another review saying these were at IKEA for $5! Thought they couldn't be that good if they only cost $5 at IKEA! So yes, they're overpriced here but I never get to the ikea store. I've used this a couple of times now and I'm so happy I bought it! I really wanted a grater that had the course grating drum and so many of the other graters have just the super fine graters. This one works awesome! I always throw my cheese in the microwave for about 7 seconds on 50% power to pull the moisture out of it before grating then the cheese doesn't get stuck in the grater. (A trick I learned at a PC party). Grates the cheese fabulous! Couldn't be happier and would highly recommend!Update:So I've owned this for just under 11 months and it just broke. It's had all kinds of cracks in it for the last 4 months or so and the handle finally gave way. I did get annoyed with how small I had to cut the cheese in order to get it in the grater...would take quite a while to shred if I wanted to grate more than a little bit. You also have to apply quite a bit of pressure to shred it. I would say its worth the $5 at IKEA, I'm thinking now that I paid too much at fifteen dollars and it's definitely not worth the current price of thirty-three dollars! Starting my search for another grater 3Wipes the floor with my Mouli Had a stainless steel version that kept grating steel into my cheese so I thought I'd try this. Works great. Decent capacity. No shards of plastic or steal in my cheese. Definitely recommend. Use the larger greater for softer cheeses 5
