Wastes a lot of coffee to get an inconsistent grind.I don't know what is going on, it seems everybody loves this grinder. I wasted a lot of coffee to get a grind that would not choke my espresso machine. When I finally got a grind that would work, I found the grind to be inconsistent. And recreating the grind with the less than accurate click setup is ridiculous. If you like espresso, save yourself the trouble and use something else. I am going back to my Cuisinart burr grinder and returning this..I contacted the seller, but received no response.1Small Capacity, Long Grind TimeTakes way too long to grind beans on a daily basis, but great for a travel grinder or spice grinder. When I get around to buying an electric grinder this will go in the camping box for its second life. The quality is much better than I was expecting for this price. I've been using it for about a year now and the ceramic burr still grinds just fine. The design of the handle and rotor eliminates the risk of stripping. The grind is consistent and easy to adjust (just make sure you don't put the toggle on upside down!). I fill the hopper to the very top and get enough grounds for a pleasant brew from my little 5-cup coffee maker.3Great little GrinderGreat little Grinder: GLG! (Pronounced "giggle" oh...oh well!) I'm loving this thing. Really makes a difference in the quality of the morning cup when it's freshly ground by your own hand. Takes a minute or so (I use a BIG coffee cup) and the taste is fabulous!Construction-wise, seems to be a solid device. I really like that the hopper on top is really just one big one instead of several little, separate ones; the grinding goes much faster if one does not have to undo a bean-jam. The Grinder teeth are conical and ceramic and this makes for metal-free coffee. The glass on the bottom is appreciated by this person who tries extra hard to keep plastics away from food. Thanks Idylc Homes for the great product!5Good Starter Ceramic Burr Grinder--BUT DON'T BUY ITThis grinder makes perfectly ground coffee, which in turn makes an excellent cup of coffee. (I use a Chemex pour over to brew.) With that said, there are some considerations. 1.) The max capacity of the grinding unit is about 3 tablespoons of wole beans. 2.) The unit disassembles completely for thorough cleaning (which should be done after each use) but there are several small parts and it's a little tricky getting the grinder back together. 3.) Grinding coffee takes FOREVER. To grind a fully filled chamber can take 15-20 minutes, and there really isn't any way to make it go faster.I grind before each brew so it's not a matter of being able to pregrind coffee; it's just that to brew a pot, I first need to commit 20 minutes for grinding. If I have nothing else to do, no problem, but if time is critical, you should probably pre-grind some more beans when you have time .With all of that said, for less than $20 I got a good ceramic grinder that let me discover the difference that freshly ground coffee processed in a ceramic burr device makes in a truly great cup of coffee. So I'm going to keep this little (it's also light and very portable) for my camping/travel kit, and invest in a good, higher capacity, electric ceramic burr grinder.I AM AMENDING MY REVIEW. AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF USING THIS DEVICE, I CANNOT RECOMMEND IT. I DISASSEMBLE THE UNIT AFTER EACH GRIND FOR CLEANING. AFTER REASSEMBLY, GETTING THE UNIT TO GRIND EFFECTIVELY ONCE AGAIN IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. I CAN NO LONGER SPEND AN HOUR EACH MORNING GRINDING COFFEE. FOR SOME REASON, GETTING THE GRINDING ELEMENTS TO ACCEPT THE BEAN REQUIRES CONSTANT READJUSTING AND REDISTRIBUTING BEANS...IT GOES ON AND IS VERY FRUSTRATING. I JUST THREW MY UINIT IN THE TRASH AND I'M DONE WITH IT. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS GRINDER, PERIOD.1Perfect grounds - fine or coarseEasy to use, fits nicely in my hand while I turn the handle to grind the beans. This thing can make VERY FINE grounds which I discovered after using it the first time :-) Backing off a couple of clicks makes perfect grounds for my Aeropress. I also really like making coarse ground for the french press because I don't end up with a lot of sediment like a blade grinder. And no static cling - the grounds fall right out of the glass jar.5Great Customer ServiceI have been using my Kona grinder for a couple of weeks now and am very satisfied. The co-founder, Jason Decena has been in frequent contact with me ensuring that I am satisfied with the product. I had some trouble with an automated offer for a spare set of burrs and he delivered immediately.I enjoy the meditation of grinding beans while the water heats on my stove. Quite simply, freshly ground coffee tastes better that factory ground coffee or kitchen slicer hacked coffee. Even the grinders in the grocery store fall short as once the coffee is ground, the greatly increased surface area lends itself to oxidation and spoilage of the coffee oils. I appreciate the coarser French press grind as I no longer have fine ground sludge at the bottom of my cup.The crank removes for easy storage. I notice that it is designed for a right-handed person. I think my neighbor might be more inclined to purchase this product if a left-handed crank was offered.I wish to include the settings for specific grinds in case yours does not include these specifics:Extra Fine: 1-3 Clicks (Turkish / Pump Driven Espresso)Med Fine: 4-6 Clicks (Aeropress / Pour-Over)Medium: 7-9 Clicks (Clever Drip / Stove Top Espresso)Med Coarse:10-12 Clicks (Chemex / Auto Drip)Coarse: 13-18 Clicks (French Press)Extra Coarse: 19-21 Clicks (Cold Brew / Toddy)5Best manual grinder in this price rangeI've tried two other manual coffee grinders in this price range and I had issues with both of them. The first was a hopper/jar burr grinder with an open top that would catch while grinding (causing beans to go flying everywhere) and it would often come unscrewed during use. The second was a metal cylindrical-style burr grinder that would also come apart during use since it didn't even screw together, and to make matters worse that grinder wouldn't ever produce an even grind.I haven't had any of the above problems with the KONA manual grinder. It's reasonably comfortable to hold in your hand while grinding and it doesn't come apart during use. The plastic lid stays put on top so I haven't spilled any beans while grinding them. It grinds the beans evenly and I haven't had any issues with an inconsistent grind so far.One of the biggest problems I have with these cheap burr grinders is that it can be difficult to know how fine the grind is set before you actually start grinding. Like the others, the KONA grinder doesn't have indicators on the dial to fix that issue. However, since the KONA has a clear bottom, you can try grinding a few beans at a time to inspect the grounds and make sure that the grind level is where you want it before you begin grinding a whole batch of beans.Since this is a fully manual grinder, it will take some time to grind your beans. I grind two tablespoons or so at a medium-fine grind and I've found this takes me less than a minute to accomplish. It's really not a big deal but it is something to be aware of if you really have to have your coffee ASAP. If that's the case, you'll probably want to look for an electric model. In all, this is a good grinder available for a reasonable price. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try a burr grinder but doesn't want to spend a fortune on one.5Forget shakeweights, buy this!Easily adjusted to any grind, disassembles easily. Can t fault the product too much for the laws of mechanics, but I did find a way to improve the design a touch.4This makes a very fine powder, like when you buy ground spicesThis makes a very fine powder, like when you buy ground spices. I use this for spices since I have an electric burr grinder for my espresso.Actually, i make this an electric burr grinder for my spices by using a power screwdriver instead of the hand wrench. Don t run it too fast though, I m not sure how much heat the burr can take before degrading.Spices are usually softer than coffee anyway, especially on second grind. I usually use a cheap blade grinder to coarse grind my spices, then the hand grinder with a power screwdriver to make fine powder.Just like they didn t do in the old days!Mortar and pestle has nothing on this :)5First Time Coffee DrinkerI've never drunk coffee, but I purchased a French press to try making fresher, more flavorful coffee. I wanted to grind beans instead of using ground coffee. The Kona grinder had good reviews and looked fairly simple to use.I have fibromyalgia and have issues with my hands. Once I got the hang of it, the Kona grinder is easy too use, and I can grind enough coffee without much issue even on my bad days. The grinder is also easy to adjust whether you want and finer or courser grind. I also love the fact that the French press take up less space than an electric coffee pot wood. I can store them in a cabinet rather than taking up counter space which is already limited.5Updated I wish I could have tried the product, but since it was broken on arrival there was no way to take it for a test run. Very poorly packaged! Initially I gave one star since I could not try the grinder.Update: Idylc Homes contacted me promptly about the issues with shipping, and the broken grinder. They sent me a replacement which shipped in two days. It seems they shipped it with the same priority, but for some reason I did not receive it for another 4-5 days.Grinder use: The grinder seems to work very well. The burr is easy to adjust, the grounds are consistent. The grinder hopper is large enough to hold enough beans for me to make half a pot of coffee in my Ninja coffee maker. And more than enough for my Coffee Press. The construction of the grinder appears to be fairly solid. The knob of the handle is solidly riveted. There is a clear plastic cover over the hopper. The beans feed into the burr very well, and the burr is adjusted easily. Very good coffee grinder for the ! 4
