Customer Reviews

My favorite everyday pencilExcellent pencils! My everyday go-to pencil for most writing. I collect pencils and have tried out most of the premium offerings on Amazon, and these are sure to outperform any Dixon Ticonderoga or any no-name pencils. This Mitsubishi offers a smooth pull across the paper, no edgy or scratchy feeling, and they don't need sharpening every 12 minutes. They lay down a clean, dark line and erase beautifully. Not that many Japanese pencils -- and they make the best pencils -- come with an eraser, so for many this is a bonus. I also love my Palomino Blackwing 602s (insanely smooth) and most any Tombow, but for the price these Mitsubishis can't be beat! For that matter, every Mitsubishi pencil I've used is a winner. Can't go wrong with these. 5The best features of this pencilThis is a classic pencil of the highest quality. The best features of this pencil:1) smooth, glide on paper writing experience. If you haven't had the pleasure of writing with Mitsubishi pencils before, you will be in for a treat.2) perfectly centered leads and a cedar barrel. This is an important feature because the cedar barrel allows for easy reliable sharpening to a fine, sharp point3) impeccable fit and finish. If you appreciate the little touches, this pencil does not disappoint. Few manufacturers have this type of attention to detail. In this case, you get what you pay for.4) an eraser that erases well without smearing. You can buy two or three dozen cheaper pencils for the price of this, and for some that might make more sense. This pencil will not be for everyone, and certainly is priced at a point where these pencils are not "throw away".The pencil comes packaged by the dozen and comes imported from Japan. The delivery is a bit lengthier but the price is very good compared to domestic alternatives.Bottom line, this is an easy one to recommend highly without reservations. 5Superior pencil at a ridiculously low price.I am a graphite artist. I'm nuts about pencils and own sets and sets of them. These are top quality. I'm quite happy to pick up one of these for drawing. Comparable to Blackwing in quality. Bit lighter and drier in feel but very smooth. They are a joy to write with. If you have never used a decent #2 pencil, this will be an experience. They are typical Japanese style, a soft smooth feel and perhaps more like a B Lumigraph. The polymer erasers is good quality. Does not smear or leave too many crumbs. If you want to carry just one pencil that you could sketch or write with, this would be an excellent choice.I originally paid about $15 for a box of 12. They are now being offered for less than $10 which is an absurdly good value. 5Excellent quality and speedy receipt of pencilsThe pencils are dark maroon in color and come unsharpened with 12 in a box. They have dark graphite lead . I bought in search of a pencil with darker lead and with the idea or hope they will hold their intensity on paper through the years. I was disappointed to find some of my old papers had become illegible with the passing of time. These are well made quality pencils. They arrived very quickly. I will purchase again. They fit my standard hand held $1 pencil sharpener. Manufacturer in Japan by Mitshubshi. 5Rare to find this quality anymoreI think my friends are tired of me gushing positive about these pencils but these are something special. Once upon a time the USA used to make pencils like these. Where the balance is perfect, the lead glides across the paper like a fountain pen and the eraser doesn't smudge. Too bad I I have to look overseas to get this kind of quality today but I'm glad I did. I use these for everything from writing lists to doing crosswords and making notations in books. The lead is also dark enough for scantron tests so they are great if you are in school. Do yourself a favor and dump the cheap Mexican made US pencils and buy a box of these, you will be impressed. 5Mitsubishi and Blackwing My FavoritesProfessional copy-editors often prefer the Palomino Blackwing pencil. It makes a very dark mark, yet takes a sharp point and does not fracture easily. I prefer the Blackwing pencil out in my shop for sketching projects on the clipboard and for marking lumber. For the normal everyday uses of a pencil, I prefer the Mitsubishi, which also takes a sharp point and does not fracture easily. I use the Mitsubishi in HB hardness.I also use the German pencil, the Faber Castell 9000, in 3B, and I use the Tombow Mono 100 in HB hardness. The four pencils I have mentioned are the finest pencils I know of. If I could only own one pencil, it would be the Palomino Blackwing. If I were allowed two pencils, the second would be the Mitsubishi. I don't know that the Mitsubishi marks better than the German pencil, or the Tombow pencil, but it has the great advantage of a slightly fatter shaft in the hand. It feels better to me than the slender pencils -- and it has an eraser.Note that the Mitsubishi is too fat to be sharpened in some manual crank pencil sharpeners. It fits fine in the traditional metal school-district sharpeners by Berol-Chicago, but will not enter some of the plastic bodied manual crank sharpeners as sold at WalMart, and similar stores. The Mitsubishi can be sharpened by any of the little plastic hand held twist-on sharpeners. 5Proper WidthI've never written a review but felt like I should mention that these pencils are slightly thicker than any standard pencil I've used before. After a few weeks I realized the subtle thickness of these pencils is what makes them so superior to common pencils (Ticonderoga, Office Depot, etc. etc.). Holding one of those traditional pencils in my hand now feels plain wrong. My fingers don't rest easily on the flats like they do with these Mitsubishis, and I'm constantly fidgeting to gain a proper grip--rotating it in my hand, shifting up and down the barrel, or making tiny shifts in pressure. My hands aren't massive, but it wasn't until using these I realized how uncomfortably small all my other pencils are. The difference is noticeable enough for me to write a focused review, which is why I'm surprised I've seen no other mention of the difference in other reviews. It's a total game changer. I'd also second all the other good things people have to say about these (the darkness, eraser, sharpening ability; everything). 5Best pencils I have ever used!I am not an art guru nor pencil connoisseur. I bought these pencils to retake the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). The first time I took the test, I used regular pencils, which I had not practiced with. Long story short, they were a disaster! After buying the Mitsubishi pencils, I realized how much a pencil can truly make a difference. I used these pencils to both practice with and take the test, my hands hurt less, my handwriting was better, and they sharpened much better than regular pencils. Overall, if you are taking an important exam, don't be cheap about the pencil you bring. Each point can cost you thousands in the long run! 5Wow, just wow.First off, I have to admit I like mechanical pencils. However, they are not the best choice in every situation. I have always disliked writing with wooden pencils because of the scratchy, grey lines. I cannot believe a product this nice performs this well. The lines are as black as night and writes as smooth as glass. A superior product that the manufacturer should be proud of. This will be my first choice from now on. 4Awesome pencils/erasersI bought these for the bar exam and these are the best (#2) pencils that I've ever used. I've always used the cheap #2 pencils from CVS, but hated the attached erasers. I always get nervous about changing my answer on a scantron sheet because cheap pencils leave residual pencil marks. I didn't want to risk losing points that way and we aren't allowed to bring separate erasers so I decided to buy these pencils. I love how smoothly and clearly these pencils write, but I was super impressed with the quality of the erasers - they cleanly and completely erased pencil marks on my scantron (couldn't tell which answers I had changed whereas with cheap pencils it was always obvious) and I didn't have to worry at all. But these were awesome pencils and worth every penny. 5
