Customer Reviews

Should have bought one years ago. (edited: no longer recommended).Perfect trade off between weight and usability. Heck of a lot easier than using my trusty old empty sherry bottles to flatten chicken. Handle is very comfortable in my larger-size hands and feels like it will stand up to my constant pounding (obviously, what it is designed to do). Not sure I really needed the tenderizer disk: I seldom go that route.Should have bought one years ago. Hope it stands up to my abuse. Been through about 10 chickens with it so far. We flatten skinless chicken breasts for several favorite family recipes -- have been able to get a much more uniform thickness that I never really took the time to get using the 'bottle method'!***Edit: weeks later, the thin plastic palm shield protecting the side of your hand from the spiked side of the pounder (when using the smooth flat side to pound chicken) broke.Perhaps it was only a shipping protector and not meant to really shield your hand, as I assumed (with no written instructions). In any event, to keep the handle steady, you must screw it down tightly to meet the pounding plate. This inevitably breaks the pretty flimsy clear plastic shield, requiring you to keep a very firm grip on the handle while pounding (if you're doing heavy duty pounding) so your hand doesn't constantly get slammed against the spikes. Even for a big guy like me, this strong gripping action becomes tiring rather quickly, and the hand starts slipping into the spikes, painfully.Design defect? Or just weak grip on my part? It works well if you have hands (and grips) of steel if you have heavy pounding or LOTS of chicken breasts to process. Otherwise, take care!No longer recommended. Buy the single flat plate version.2Spikes Can Be ProblematicI didn't fully understand how this was built. I thought the spiked surface was an attachment. It's not...it's the opposite side of the flat surface. There is a screw that runs down the center of the handle and the pounding plate screws into it. It can be flipped like a coin to give you the flat or spiked side facing down. This means that if you want to use the flat surface, the spikes are pointing up. And since there is not a large flange at the base of the handle, the spikes come in contact with your hand. Now, I realize that you should not be pounding meat with the force of a sledge hammer and the spikes are not needle sharp, but it's something to consider when choosing this product over others.Feels pretty solid. Handle could be a little bigger. The nut holding the center screw in place inside the handle is rusted AF.These are all minor issue not worth returning the product over.4No kitchen should be without this!Pounds chicken flat almost effortlessly without tearing it apart. Tenderizer spikes work great on veal and, when used gently, great for infusing rubs into meat. Cleans easily in dishwasher without losing its beautiful finish. Sooooo much better than aluminum or wooden mallets!5Heavy and sturdy...just the thing to flatten those scaloppini!I had the cheap, aluminium 2 face hammer, tore rather than flatten. And one day I say a chef, using this tool and I search I and low to find one. This thing is so great. The picks do tenderize, quite well at that too. But one must be careful they prick. The price is just perfect I find. Very good quality. I recommend it highly. It will crunch, punch and flatten all that you present it.5Replaced old wood malletWe often pound chicken breasts or boneless pork for meals. I had been using a wood mallet I'd had for decades, but usually had to use the side of the mallet rather then the end to keep from damaging the meat. After seeing a more expensive version of this product, I decided to try the Norpro one and retired my old wood mallet. I haven't used the tenderizing side of the tool yet, but I've been very pleased with the flat side. The handle is comfortable and much easier to use than the old mallet was.I feel this is a well designed product that will last for many years.4Very niceDefinitely like & looks nice. You get an even piece of meat. Use to have meat hammer but never evened out meat, it would basically chop meat. Will buy 4 more for my adult kids kitchens5I love itVery heavy and easy to use. Makes short work out of thick chicken beasts. However. Cleaning it is a bit of a pain because of hard to reach nooks. I still recommended it though. I just wrap it and the meat im tenderizing in plastic.5Smashed it Hate giving 5 stars before using it but it looks good and feels good in my hand. 5Even the toughest meats will become like tenderloins [no joke]Works as advertised. Even the toughest meats will become like tenderloins [no joke]. Read the reviews about cleaning concerns. Will order another or two as Christmas present[s].5Fantastic TenderizerI absolutely LOVE this Meat Tenderizer. I got it yesterday and used it to pound out some stuffed chicken breasts, it worked beautifully. Very happy I spent the extra money to get a high quality tenderizer, it was worth every penny!5Great buy. I really like this thing. Its modern, its heavy, its reversible. They only downside is that its a LITTLE small, circumference wise. I wish the "pounding area" was a little bigger, but I'm just nitpicking at this point. So far, its been fine in the dishwasher, which is great because you HAVE to use the dishwasher to wash the tenderizer side. I recommend this. 4great product, one minor flaw. This meat pounder / tenderizer does a great job on chicken and veal cutlets. It's heavy so a full wind up and swing is not needed. The head covers a good size area also making the job easier. As far as how well it works, I'm completely satisfied.I think the head is made of stainless steel but the product description does not specify (unlike the pounder only). As described, the handle unscrews for reversing the sides of the head. This makes for easy dishwasher cleaning for the base. I wouldn't be comfortable putting the handle into a hot sanitizing cycle.I would have rated this product 5 stars but the screw which inserts into the head is held on to the handle by a nut which became a bit loose right away.4
