Customer Reviews

Great supplement to Hue!These bulbs are awesome to complement a Philips Hue home, or to do a poor man s version of it.They simulate the three basic Hue scenes I use the most: Soft White, Daylight, and Nightlight. I use those scenes 95% of the time. I wish it did Reading mode, but Soft White is OK for that.I have issues sleeping and waking up regularly. With these bulbs and Philips Hue I have my entire apartment setup to change color temperatures throughout my day and regulate the amount of blue light I see. Make it easier to work on projects in work areas with daylight, and helps with taking photographs of stuff your e selling on CL too.I use them in my apartment in places where to use a full Philips smart bulb when its a room I infrequently go, its impractical or too expensive. I use Sceneswitch bulbs in:- my bathroom (smart lights in a bathroom are bad for security, pranks, damage from steam/exploding cleaning fluids/poo/what have you. Plus plunking down the money for a physical smart light switch? Use these instead!)- my kitchen- my dining room (only because it would cost $100+ to do it)Use these to supplement your Hue system (one of these bulbs is 33% of the price of a single White Ambiance), and you won t be disappointed.5A pretty good solution without unnecessary complexityIn the last dozen years or so, lighting has put us in an awkward spot. As technology marched away from incandescent bulbs, life got complicated. The dimmer switches that we'd used for decades no longer worked--in fact, they made things worse with buzzing bulbs that died early deaths because of their incompatibility with our legacy switches. And so we actually took a step backward for a while, like that awkward transition into digital television that suddenly left us unable to watch one channel while recording another.Recently, we've begun to dig out of this awkward spot. Dimmable LED bulbs can be had for fairly little money--and if you've already got an old school dimmer switch installed in your home, then that's probably a better buy than than the single-color, selectable-brightness variety of SceneSwitch bulbs. But if you don't have that antiquated technology already installed in your walls, then SceneSwitch presents an intriguing promise: selectable brightness without backing you into an awkward corner of using either a conventional dimmer switch that's already a dying technology or a modern smartphone app that locks you into one manufacturer's ecosystem and may or may not still be supported in a few years. For the consumer in this tight spot, SceneSwitch (which is not a smart bulb and does not interface with a Hue system) is a great relief. Just flip your ordinary light switch off and on again to toggle through the modes. While it's wonderful to see a mostly clean solution to controlling brightness in a world that's been deprived for too long, where SceneSwitch really shines is the color-changing bulb. This is where Phillips not only matches but finally surpasses the technology that we took for granted decades ago. It's all well and good to be able to control brightness, but where I've struggled lately was with light color. Blue light gets something of a bad rap lately, with red-tinted glasses and smartphone apps trying to limit our exposure to this terribly, sleep-disrupting menace. But if blue light is nature's way of telling your body that it's daytime, then it is perhaps just as important to be exposed to it during the day as it is to avoid it at night. On weekends, if I sat down for a moment in my warmly lit living room, I was about ready to fall asleep before my day has even properly begun. I considered getting an electrician to come wire up a second set of light fixtures, but it would've been an expensive solution that cluttered our room with more fixtures and the light switches to control them. And so I very nearly bought an expensive set of Phillips Hue smart bulbs. This product listing is a little confusing because there are three different models available: one offers warm light at three different brightnesses, one offers cool light at three different brightnesses, and three last option (the one I bought) offers three different color/brightness combinations: full brightness warm light, full brightness cool light, and a dim extra-warm light. I've attached a picture showing all three light colors (and one bulb that's off).I agree with another reviewer who says the last two color settings should be reversed. If you're going for a natural light cycle, you would logically want to progress from daylight to soft light to warm glow. As it is, you have to flip the switch twice at every transition, which does get a little annoying when you're doing it multiple times per day. Of course, if Phillips changes it now then the results would be maddening if you tried to use old and new bulbs in the same fixture, so they've backed themselves into a little bit of a corner with that mistake. Other reviewers also complain that a bulb can easily get out of sync with the others in the fixture. This is probably due to the fact that any light switch will "bounce" a little as you turn it on and off--making and breaking power a few times. Phillips undoubtedly set these up to try to ignore extremely brief interruptions in power, and maybe they could try to fine tune it a little better, but I don't find it happening terribly often. If it does happen, know that there's no need to go unscrewing the bulbs to fix it: just flip your switch off and on a few times and they'll revert to their warm light setting and be back in sync. Another mild but not product-ruining annoyance. For me, I'm very glad to have found a way to have circadian lighting in my living room without buying into a complicated and expensive smart bulb system. It's probably too fiddly to want to do the whole house this way, but even ignoring the steep price tag of smart bulb systems I'm not happy with their awkward integration--i.e., having to stop using your ordinary light switch and control the bulbs instead from either a custom app or a battery powered remote. If you're willing to buy into that complexity, smart bulbs would instead allow you to schedule the light color throughout the day so that you don't have to manually flip between daytime and nighttime modes. But I just don't like where that technology stands right now. For me, SceneSwitch is a good compromise.4Nice bulbs.A good alternative for wiring a dimmer switch. Impressed with these bulbs. They work very well. I like that they remember and turn back on to the last setting (bulb must be off for more than 5 seconds).Tested by putting all 4 in my bath vanity light fixture, and went thru the settings several times. All bulbs stayed in sync.If they would get out of sync, just flip the switch on/off very quickly a few times, and the bulbs will go to 100%I measured the power used on the three settings, and found that the bulbs use slightly less wattage as what's listed on the package. I suppose they rounded the numbers.% Watts Amps Note------- ------ ------- ------------------------------------------------------100% 8.5 .109 .5 watt less that stated on package.40% 2.7 .036 32% power usage (based on 8.5 watts at 100%).10% .8 .013 9.4% power usage (based on 8.5 watts at 100%).4What a simple brilliant ideaThese are so simple and ingenious I honestly find it hard to believe that nobody has thought to do this before. I got these to stick in my bathroom light fixture because at five AM, three 60 watt bulbs was just way too much. I was at the point where is was unscrewing all but one bulb every morning and I was seriously contemplating installing a dimmer. Now I can just leave these on their dimmest setting so I am not getting blasted with light first thing in the morning. I also have connected Hue bulbs in other rooms in the house in various lamps and such and that's how I stumbled across these. I had considered getting Hue bulbs for the bathroom, but that just seemed like overkill, Plus I really just wanted something simple that didn't involve fiddling with an application or yelling across the house for google to dim the bathroom lights and these just fit the bill perfectly. I would definitely recommend them to anyone and I'll probably be getting more of them for other rooms of the house. I also kind of want to try out the Daylight/Soft white version next.5Saved my marriage ;)I love daylight bulbs, my husband hates them. I thought I was going to have to keep switching back and forth between our 5000k and our 3200k bulbs until I found these LEDs. They are perfect! I experimented with color changing bulbs before I bought these but they just weren't bright enough and I don't need quite as many colors; I also didn't want to have to deal with a remote or an app. Now all I have to do is switch the lights off and on again to change between settings. I'm so happy I found these!!5I love these bulbs!I love these bulbs. They solve the major problems that have plagued LED bulbs, that being the incompatibility of LED bulbs with dimmers. I've tried several brands of "dimmable" bulbs, but they all seem to have similar problems. Almost all of them buzz when they are dimmed. Almost all of them don't have a warm glow at the lowest setting. Almost all of them dim to a point and then dramatically turn off. Almost all of them, if you can get them to a low setting cannot be turned on and off at that setting. If a bulb performs well for one or two of these challenges, it fails miserably at the others. For example it may not buzz, but it only seems to dim to half brightness. These bulbs solve these problems in a very creative way -- by not using a dimmer! They change brightness by flipping your light switch off and on within 5 seconds. There are three brightness settings, Bright, Medium and Low. I find that these three settings are just right. For instance, in our living room, we keep the light on Low when watching a video, Medium is good for entertaining, and Bright is good for housecleaning. We have chandeliers that have multiple bulbs. We've found that having 6 bulbs on Bright is overpowering in a bedroom, so we put low powered nightlights (1/2 watt LED) in 2 or 3 of the sockets and used these bulbs in the rest. Perfect! If you turn the lights off for more than 5 seconds the bulb remembers your last setting and that is the level of lighting that you will get when you turn the lights back on. There are some other brands that are similar to this bulb, but they reset to high whenever the lights go off. I think it makes much more sense to return to the level of lighting the way it was before. In our Living room we usually keep the lights on low, and just occasionally want it brighter. These bulbs remember our preference, the other brand does not.I liked these so much I bought a dozen more and took out some of our dimmers and replaced them with old fashioned switches. Be warned, these do not work with dimmers! Some dimmers make them flicker, even when they are set to full power. So you might want swap them out for regular switches. But the good news is that you can add 3 levels of lighting in places where you never had it before.5yellower light good for nightsDoesn't cover the whole spectrum of lighting possibilities (get it?), but does hit the three you most commonly want: bright blueish daylight, bright yellowish evening light, and a dim, yellower light good for nights. Works painlessly as a drop-in replacement for standard bulbs on standard switches and fixtures (you don't need three-way wiring or switches or anything like that), you flip the light off and on again quickly to switch to the next setting. The one caveat is that if you have a multi-bulb fixture and flip the lightswitch too quickly, some of the bulbs will change but some won't. Now that I know not to do it too fast it's not really a problem, but when it did happen I'd unscrew, just enough to break its current, the odd one out for a second to switch only it. Not a big deal.EDIT: I thought of one thing wrong with them: the color cycle is in the wrong order. It's white -> dim yellow -> bright yellow, the last two should be swapped, because that's the order you'd want to follow in a typical day. Not a big deal, obviously, but hopefully they'll fix it in a future rev.4Whoever invented these needs to get a nobel prize! ...Whoever invented these needs to get a nobel prize! These are the coolest light bulbs. Don't need a dimmer switch. Just flip your ight switch on and off to get the brightness level you want. The dim setting throws just enough light and the bright is plenty bright. We own both the daylight and the soft white styles. Why didn't someone invent these before? The dimmer switch industry is going to go out of business!5Three distinctive light settings from one LED bulb? Now that's a bright idea!Found this Philips SceneSwitch Daylight/Soft White A19 LED Light Bulb (464867) from my local HarDware store. The ability to generating different color temperatures and brightness levels from one single bulb intrigues me, so I want to see how well it actually works.[Modes of Operation]- When you power up the SceneSwitch LED bulb for the first time, it comes up as 60W-equivalent Soft White (800 lumens 2700k)- Turn the light off and then on within ~5 sec, it changes to 60W-equivalent Daylight (800 lumens 5000K)- Turn off/on again within 5 sec, and the light dims down to a warm glow (80 lumens 2200K)See my uploaded picture to compare the three different light settingsIf you turn the light off and wait more than 5 sec to turn it back on again, it wakes up in the same setting instead of advancing to the next one. This is a good design since you don't have to cycle the light switch every time, just to return to the preferred setting.[Power Consumption]I used the EUM-A1 Power Usage Meter to measure the power consumption. Here is what I observed:- Natural Mode: 8.7W initially. Dropping to ~8.2W after 1 hour.- Daylight Mode: 7.7W initially. Remains stable around 7.6W after 1 hour.- Warm Glow mode: 2.4WSo the power regulation is reasonably good. Note that the light efficacy (lumens per watt) is higher in daylight mode. This is to be expected for most LED bulbs, since the White light is actually generated from Blue LEDs covered with Yellow phosphor.[Bottom Line]Is this SceneSwitch LED bulb right for you? If you want to occasionally switch between Daylight and Soft White at the same brightness level, then absolutely. If you prefer to stay with Soft/Warm White but switch between different brightness levels, then I recommend the Philips SceneSwitch Soft White A19 LED bulb (464993). Its three light settings are:- 800 lumens at 2700K (equivalent to 60W incandescent bulb),- 320 lumens at 2500K (equivalent to 25W incandescent).- 80 lumens 2200K (almost like a nightlight)As of this writing, the Philips SceneSwitching bulb is priced 2-3 times higher than a generic A19 LED bulb. So just from price stand point it may not sound like a great deal. But the whole point is that I can get three different light settings from just one bulb, verses swapping between three different bulbs, or investing a lot more to control the light from my cell phone. For me, the flexibility and convenience of this solution make it a great buy.5Frequently out of syncUPDATE: Following the suggestion of a comment here on this review I tried flipping the switch three times fast to get the bulbs back in sync. This worked! I'm updating from 3 stars to 4, keeping one star removed because I just don't love how often they get out of sync, but being able to use the switch to get them in sync again makes it a much simpler solution when it happens (every couple days).Love the concept, and they do work. This was an easy way to give lighting options in our bathroom because we like to dim the lights a bit for our toddler's bedtime bath to help relax him. However, with a few bulbs on the same switch we're finding them getting out of sync with each other quite frequently. We remedy the issue by removing the out of sync bulb and flipping the switch to sync up the other bulbs then replacing the bulb. It's getting pretty annoying. I would recommend these bulbs if you're using a single bulb on one switch, but would not recommend using these if a switch will control multiple bulbs.4
